How to host a dog-friendly BBQ

Keep open flames, hot grease drip pans, and sizzling grates far out of reach. Set up a physical barrier, such as a freestanding playpen gate or decorative outdoor fencing, around your grill. Never leave a hot grill unattended when dogs are loose in the yard.

To dogs, open trash cans are treasure chests full of grease-soaked napkins, toxic onions, and dangerous wooden skewers. Use heavy-duty, lidded trash cans that lock or elevate your garbage bins onto high outdoor tables where curious noses can't tip them over.

Include your dogs in the feast! Toss a few unseasoned, extra-lean ground turkey or beef slider patties onto a clean, sauce-free section of the grill. Chop them into bite-sized pieces once cooled and serve them as a special party treat.

Direct sun and physical play can cause rapid dehydration. Place multiple heavy, non-tip water bowls in shaded areas around the yard. Toss in large ice cubes or freeze low-sodium chicken broth inside a Kong toy to keep pups cool and occupied.

Well-meaning guests are often the biggest source of accidental slips! Politely inform everyone upon arrival—especially children—not to feed dogs scraps from their plates. You can leave a jar of approved, low-calorie dog treats nearby so guests can still interact and reward good behavior safely.

Even the most social dogs can get overwhelmed by loud laughter, slamming gate doors, or bustling crowds. Set up a quiet bedroom indoors with a cozy bed, fresh water, a white noise machine, and a favorite chew toy where dogs can retreat for a relaxing nap.
