Kitten Growth Chart: Weight and Milestone Timeline by Week
Watching a newborn kitten transform into a chaotic, pouncing ball of energy is one of the most rewarding experiences a pet lover can have. In those first two months, kittens undergo an astonishing biological transformation—essentially doubling their birth weight in the first seven days alone.
However, this rapid growth window leaves zero room for error. Because a kitten's immune system is fragile, tracking physical weight shifts daily is your absolute best metric to verify they are thriving. A sudden drop or plateau in weight is often the very first indicator of an underlying medical emergency. Let's break down the definitive, week-by-week timeline of healthy feline development.
The Quick-Reference Kitten Growth Chart
While exact numbers vary slightly by breed (a Maine Coon will naturally scale larger than a Siamese), healthy kittens generally maintain a steady, highly predictable trajectory. Use this master table to audit your kitten's progress:
| Age / Timeline | Average Weight Range | Primary Developmental Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Birth (0–7 Days) | 3.5 – 5.0 oz (100 – 150g) | Eyes/ears sealed; entirely reliant on nursing & external heat. |
| Week 2 (Days 8–14) | 5.0 – 8.5 oz (150 – 240g) | Eyes begin peeling open (all blue); initial crawling attempts. |
| Week 3 (Days 15–21) | 8.5 – 11.5 oz (240 – 325g) | Ear canals open up; initial baby teeth (incisors) push through. |
| Week 4 (Days 22–28) | 11.5 – 15.0 oz (325 – 425g) | Unsteady walking; initial play behaviors; grooming begins. |
| Week 5 (Days 29–35) | 15.0 – 19.5 oz (425 – 550g) | Weaning begins; transition to slurry; litter training launch. |
| Week 6 (Days 36–42) | 19.5 – 24.0 oz (550 – 680g) | Social play peaks; coordinated running and jumping. |
| Week 7 (Days 43–49) | 24.0 – 28.0 oz (680 – 800g) | Adult eye color shifts begin; fully eating solid wet food. |
| Week 8 (Days 50–56) | 2.0 lbs or more (900g+) | Fully weaned; ready for initial vaccines & spay/neuter scope. |
Stage 1: The Neonatal Window (Weeks 1 to 3)
During the opening three weeks, kittens are fundamentally helpless. They cannot regulate their own internal body temperature, nor can they urinate or defecate without mechanical stimulation from the queen (mother cat) or an intensive foster caretaker.
Newborns spend roughly 90% of their life sleeping and the remaining 10% nursing. Their umbilical cord stub will naturally dry up and detach between days three and five. Keep them in an enclosed nesting box set to an ambient temperature of 85°F to 90°F.
Between days 8 and 14, the magic happens: eyes begin to unseal. Never attempt to manually pry a kitten’s eyes open; let the process occur organically. They will initially appear cloudy and blue, with highly limited visual clarity.
Ear canals fully unseal, causing the kitten to startle at sharp noises. You will notice tiny, needle-sharp incisors breaking through the front gums. Their crawling transitions into a clumsy, wide-legged waddle.
Stage 2: Exploration & The Weaning Shift (Weeks 4 to 5)
This is the transitional sweet spot where your tiny dependents turn into actual self-aware cats. Their cognitive processing accelerates, and they begin interacting deeply with their littermates and environment.
The distinctive long canine teeth begin breaking through the gums. Kittens will actively explore outside the boundaries of their nesting box and show initial pouncing and swatting mechanics. They can also now self-eliminate without motherly assistance.
Introduce a shallow cookie sheet filled with non-clumping, paper-based pellet litter (do not use clumping clay, as they will attempt to eat it). This is also the time to introduce a "slurry"—a mixture of premium canned kitten wet food blended smoothly with warm kitten milk replacer (KMR).
Stage 3: Independence & Optimization (Weeks 6 to 8)
By week six, the heavy lifting of fostering begins to taper off. The kittens are highly agile, fiercely independent eaters, and their adult personalities fully crystallize.
Week 6: Unstoppable Play Mechanics
Their internal thermoregulation is fully matured, meaning they can safely navigate a standard-temperature room. Their grooming instincts lock in, and they will spend extensive blocks of time meticulously cleaning themselves and their siblings after eating raw or canned solid kitten foods.
Week 7: The Eye Color Metamorphosis
The universal kitten-blue shade on their irises begins to fade, giving way to their true permanent adult eye color—whether green, gold, amber, or copper. Their physical coordination is near-flawless; they can jump up onto low couches and balance across narrow perches.
Week 8: The Milestone Target
The major physiological target for week eight is hitting the 2-pound mark (approx. 900 grams). In the animal rescue world, reaching 2 pounds means the kitten's liver and metabolic systems are robust enough to safely process anesthesia, qualifying them for their FVRCP vaccine series and spay or neuter operations.
A Lifetime Foundation
The intense growth journey from birth to two months lays down the permanent architectural blueprint for your cat's long-term immune system and skeletal health. By managing their diet, charting continuous weight gains, and timing their weaning windows carefully, you ensure they skip developmental pitfalls completely.
Never rely on guesswork. Invest in a digital scale, stock up on specialized lifestage nutrition, and partner closely with your family veterinarian to cross the week-eight finish line with flying colors.
