Zeolite Dosage for Horses: Application, Tips & Practical Guide
We recently covered how zeolite is an absolute game-changer for neutralizing ammonia and moisture on the barn floor. But this incredible volcanic mineral isn't just an external tool—it is rapidly becoming one of the most trusted internal supplements for equine digestive health and heavy metal detoxification. When you are mixing feed in the barn, especially with a curious babu running around trying to "help" with the chores, you want to make sure every supplement you use is completely safe, natural, and properly measured.
Feeding zeolite to horses can bind mycotoxins in tainted forage, stabilize gut pH, and alleviate acute diarrhea. However, dosing it incorrectly or timing the application poorly can interfere with medications or cause dehydration. In this 2026 nutritional guide, we break down exactly how to dose, prepare, and apply zeolite for your horse's internal health.
The Zeolite Dosing Matrix
Dosage varies significantly depending on whether you are supporting general health or addressing an acute digestive issue. Always use a digital kitchen scale for accuracy, rather than measuring by volume (scoops), as the density of zeolite powder can fluctuate.
| Application Goal | Recommended Dosage (Average 1,000 lb Horse) | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Maintenance / General Detox | 10 to 15 grams per day. | Once daily, mixed thoroughly into wet feed. |
| High-Toxin Load / Poor Forage Quality | 20 to 30 grams per day. | Split into two doses (Morning/Evening). |
| Acute Diarrhea / Free Fecal Water | 30 to 40 grams per day (temporary). | Split into two doses; reduce as symptoms improve. |
4 Practical Tips for Feeding Zeolite
High-quality zeolite for internal use is milled into a microscopic, ultra-fine powder to maximize its surface area for toxin absorption. If you simply dump this dry powder on top of dry grain, your horse will inevitably inhale the dust as they chew, which can severely irritate their respiratory tract. Always mix zeolite into soaked beet pulp, wet mash, or dampen their regular grain with a splash of water or oil to bind the powder to the feed.
Not all zeolite is created equal, and you cannot feed the same grade you use for barn floors. Internal equine supplements must be pure Clinoptilolite Zeolite. This specific crystalline structure is what safely traps toxins. Ensure the product you purchase is labeled for internal animal consumption and has been third-party tested to be free of naturally occurring heavy metals.
Zeolite acts like a microscopic sponge in the digestive tract. While this is precisely why it is so effective at curing watery stools, it also means it actively absorbs intestinal moisture. If a horse is taking a daily zeolite supplement, they must have unrestricted access to clean, fresh water at all times. If you notice their manure becoming excessively dry or hard, reduce the dosage immediately.
While a low maintenance dose is generally safe year-round, intensive detox dosages (20g+) should be cycled. A common protocol is to run a high dose for 3 to 4 weeks to clear out accumulated mycotoxins or address a gut imbalance, and then step down to a maintenance dose, or remove it entirely, allowing the digestive tract to reset.
The Verdict: A Powerful Natural Binder
When dosed accurately and administered with plenty of water, pure Clinoptilolite Zeolite is a highly effective tool for managing your horse's gut health. By following weight-based guidelines, wetting the feed to prevent inhalation, and strictly timing it away from medications, you can safely harness the detoxifying power of this unique mineral.
