Can Dogs Get Colds? What to Know (and How to Help)
When seasonal cold bugs cycle through your household, it is easy to worry when your dog starts sneezing or coughing right alongside the family. As babu settles in for an afternoon nap and the rest of the house quiets down, hearing your four-legged companion sniffle from their dog bed can leave any pet parent feeling concerned.
The short answer is yes, dogs can get cold-like illnesses—but they do not catch human cold viruses. Instead, canine colds are caused by species-specific pathogens that target your dog’s upper respiratory system. In this comprehensive guide, we unpack what causes canine colds, how to distinguish mild sniffles from emergency conditions, and how to safely nurse your dog back to full health at home.
Understanding Canine Upper Respiratory Infections
Human cold viruses (like rhinoviruses) cannot jump to dogs, nor can your dog pass their cold bug to you or your children. However, canine upper respiratory infections (URIs) spread rapidly between dogs in social settings such as dog parks, boarding kennels, or grooming salons.
The most common culprits behind canine cold symptoms include:
- Bordetella Bronchiseptica: The primary bacterium responsible for "kennel cough," causing a dry, honking cough.
- Canine Parainfluenza Virus: A highly contagious virus causing mild respiratory distress and sneezing.
- Canine Adenovirus Type 2: Affects the airway passages and contributes significantly to respiratory complexes.
- Canine Influenza (Dog Flu): A more severe viral infection causing high fevers, lethargy, and deep coughs.
Mild Dog Cold vs. Veterinary Emergency
Before starting home care, verify that your dog is suffering from a mild cold rather than a severe lower respiratory issue like pneumonia or bronchitis.
| Clinical Symptom | Mild Dog Cold (Home Care Safe) | Emergency Red Flag (Vet Visit Required) |
|---|---|---|
| Coughing Type | Occasional dry hack or throat clearing. | Wet, rattling, painful cough, or continuous honking fits. |
| Nasal Discharge | Clear, watery liquid from both nostrils. | Thick green, yellow, or bloody nasal mucus. |
| Breathing Pattern | Normal breathing rate and smooth chest movement. | Labored, shallow, rapid breathing, or flared nostrils. |
| Appetite & Water Intake | Slightly picky, but still eating and drinking. | Complete refusal of food or water for over 24 hours. |
| Body Temperature | Normal range (101.0°F – 102.5°F / 38.3°C – 39.2°C). | Fever above 103.5°F (39.7°C) or severe hypothermia. |
4 Safe Home Remedies to Help Your Dog Recover
Steam is one of the quickest ways to break up nasal congestion and soothe an inflamed throat. Run your bathroom shower on high heat with the door closed for 5 to 10 minutes until the room fills with steam. Bring your dog inside and sit on the floor with them for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep them away from the hot running water, and wipe down their coat with a warm towel afterward so they don't catch a chill.
Congestion dulls your dog's sense of smell, making their standard kibble unappealing. Warm up wet canned food slightly, or top their kibble with low-sodium, onion-free warm bone broth. The aroma encourages them to eat, keeping their strength and immunity high.
Limit physical activity during their recovery. Walking in cold air can trigger spasms in inflamed airways. Additionally, swap their neck collar for a chest harness during brief bathroom breaks outdoors—pressure from a neck collar pulls directly against an irritated trachea, sparking painful coughing fits.
Place a cool-mist humidifier near your dog’s primary bed or crate to maintain moisture in the air throughout the night. Ensure fresh water is readily accessible in multiple spots around your home to thin out respiratory secretions.
The Verdict: Monitor closely and prioritize rest
Most mild canine colds resolve naturally within 7 to 10 days with basic supportive care, adequate hydration, and plenty of rest. However, if your dog's symptoms worsen, or if you are caring for a puppy, senior dog, or flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed, schedule a veterinary check-up early to prevent secondary bacterial infections.
