What Causes Hot Spots on Dogs? (And How to Treat Them)
Few things worry a pet owner faster than discovering a sudden, inflamed red patch on their dog's skin. You might go to bed with a completely healthy pup, only to wake up the next morning—just as babu begins morning play—to find your dog obsessively licking, biting, and scratching at a painful, oozing lesion.
In veterinary medicine, these lesions are known as Acute Moist Dermatitis, commonly called hot spots. Hot spots develop within hours when a localized itch triggers an intense self-trauma cycle. Understanding what triggers this reaction is the secret to resolving hot spots quickly and preventing them from returning.
The Root Causes of Canine Hot Spots
A hot spot is not a standalone disease; it is a secondary symptom caused by an underlying irritation. When an itch occurs, the dog licks, chews, or scratches the spot continuously. This breaks the skin barrier, introducing normal skin bacteria deep into tissue, causing rapid bacterial overgrowth and intense inflammation.
| Primary Cause | Biological Mechanism | Typical Body Location |
|---|---|---|
| Flea & Insect Bites | A single flea bite can trigger Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), causing severe localized allergic itching. | Rump, base of tail, thighs, lower back. |
| Ear Infections | Bacterial or yeast overgrowth inside the ear canal causes intense pain, prompting relentless scratching. | Behind ears, cheeks, jawline, neck. |
| Trapped Moisture | Wet fur from swimming or baths traps moisture against thick undercoats, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. | Chest, neck, shoulders, thick coat folds. |
| Environmental Allergies | Pollens, grasses, or food sensitivities trigger general skin inflammation (atopic dermatitis). | Paws, belly, flanks, inner thighs. |
| Boredom or Joint Pain | Licking releases endorphins. Dogs with arthritis or anxiety may lick joints or paws continuously. | Wrists, ankles, forelegs, paws. |
4 Actionable Steps to Treat Hot Spots at Home
Airflow is essential for healing. Carefully clip the hair surrounding the hot spot using electric clippers (never scissors, which can snip inflamed skin). Exposing the lesion to air allows it to dry out and stops bacterial proliferation under matted fur.
Gently clean the wound using a mild antiseptic solution, such as diluted chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine. Pat the area dry gently with a clean paper towel. Avoid harsh rubbing, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide, which damage healing tissue and cause sharp pain.
A hot spot cannot heal if your dog continues to lick or scratch it. Place an Elizabethan collar (cone) or inflatable recovery collar on your dog immediately. Preventing further self-trauma is 90% of the battle in hot spot recovery.
Use a hydrocortisone spray or veterinary antibacterial/antifungal cream to soothe inflammation and reduce itching. Ensure the area remains dry after application.
The Verdict: Quick Action Stops Hot Spots Fast
Hot spots spread rapidly, but catching them early and breaking the itch-scratch cycle with proper clipping, cleaning, and protection will have your dog back to comfort in no time. Addressing underlying triggers like flea prevention and ear health keeps hot spots away for good.
